The Portland Trailblazers Draft Michael Jordan?

Just imagine for a moment Bulls fans, Michael Jordan lived in Oregon and was destroying the western conference. Air Jordan started his flight in Portland and flew high over any man without a boarding pass. Ordinary men would not qualify to share the skys with Jordan but only watch him from the ground floor. The Portland Trailblazers made the right decision by drafting this young man from North Carolina. Only history will show the greatness of this draft class but it is Jordan that will transform the history books.

The Calgary Crush opened up their inaugural season with a 2 game sweep of the Washington Rampage. With attendance over 1200 for opening weekend the Crush put on a show well worth the small price of admission. Sports fans in Calgary finally got a taste of professional basketball and the table was full of mouthwatering excitement. A handful of eye popping alley oops and powerful dunks ignited the crowd into a frenzy while sparking the Crush to a 2-0 record to start the season. “It was the most fun basketball game I ever played in,” said forward Tyler Fidler. After a solid performance this weekend the Crush are now ranked in the top 15 in the ABA power rankings and looking to make some noise in the Pacific Northwest Division.

The games were not only competitive but exciting for all fans that shoveled through the snow and decided to support basketball in Calgary. “I think we put on a lot of excitement for the fans,” said general manager Greg Smith. You could really feel the energy in the building and the joy the players felt representing their city. The Crush are members of the community who not only work and live in the city but take pride in growing the game they love. Not only do they provide their time to grow the sport but they are trying to use their skills to spread the seed of basketball across Southern Alberta.

The Crush showed a strong team performance using a 14 man roster to its full potential. “We definitely played as a team and ran our sets really well,” said forward Jermaine Campbell. With a thin lineup on the other bench coach Eddie Richardson III took advantage with an up and down pace while constantly using fresh legs to wear down the undermanned Rampage. “It is going to take time but if we execute like last night we are going to look good this season,” said Richardson. The Crush will play their next game on December 15 against the Kitsap Admirals in another 2 game series. “I think now that we won a couple of games the word is going to get out,” said guard Allen Kadima.

All home games are played at SAIT. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. The Crush expect to get another great showing from the fans and maybe give them an early Christmas present with a 4-0 start to the season. With home grown talent this team is equipped to take on its American Competition and embrace a new generation of Canadian sports fans. Basketball is ready to explode and the Crush are prepared to light the flame that ignites the basketball community in Calgary. The future of basketball in Calgary looks a little brighter but only time will tell if the sun will set on the Western Canadian team or if basketball fans in Calgary will rise to support their new professional sports team.
